Activision: Destiny Will Continue To Have Both Microtransactions And Expansions

November 3, 2015 by Carlos Chism

The company’s top executive says both have been selling well.

During an earnings call today, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said that Destiny’s microtransactions and paid expansions are both selling well, so players can expect to see more of both in the future.

In an answer to whether or not the game was changing its business model to favor microtransactions over paid expansions, Hirshberg said: "I think they're already co-existing," "We had a full year of expansions to the game that have been very well received and sold quite well. More recently, you've seen us introduce smaller, in-game purchases that allow people to customize their experience and express themselves; those have been very well received and have sold well also. I think we've already shown that DLC and microtransactions can co-exist and that our community is hungry for more great content."

Hirshberg reminded analysts that Destiny players spend on average three hours per day playing the game. “As far as any shifts in strategy, I don't have any announcements today, but I think we have a lot of options at our disposal," he said. "And the reason for that of course is that we have such great engagement with this game."

Destiny’s most recent expansion The Taken King has been lauded by critics as a good update that fixes several major issues that have been plaguing the game since launch. The prior two expansions, The Dark Below and House of Wolves, were met with lukewarm receptions, due to not adding much new content or making major changes to the game.
