Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a Standalone Game with ‘a Good Number of Levels’

November 2, 2015 by Stephen Daly

The on-rails setting allows the developer to ‘provide pacing’.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a full PlayStation VR game and a "completely standalone product," executive producer Simon Harris has told VG247.

The Supermassive Games developer spoke to the site at a press preview event last week in Paris.

“It’s not DLC, or anything like that. It’s its own product for PlayStation VR; it’s just set in the world of Until Dawn. This game charts the descent into madness of one of the characters from the Until Dawn universe. As they play through, fans of the series will start to recognise very familiar locations, some things around the characters and other similar aspects.

“It’s very much set in that world and that universe, but it’s a completely separate game.”

Harris would not be drawn on exactly how much content players can expect from the experience, but he did note that a level will be around 15 minutes long and "there'll be a good number of levels in the game."

While the entire game is on-rails, Harris stressed that this was actually an opportunity for the developer, commenting, “As soon as you say ‘on-rails’ to an experienced PlayStation gamer, they say, ‘That sounds a little 80s or 90s to me.’ But the experience of a roller coaster ride allows us to provide pacing. If you play the demo you’ll see that you have fast sections and slow sections as you go up hills.”

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood leaked a few days ahead of its announcement during Sony's recent Paris Games Week press conference and will be released exclusively on PlayStation VR in 2016. Despite a lack of marketing or promotion from Sony, Until Dawn was generally received well and sales exceeded expectations when it released in August.
