Deus Ex Mankind Divided Will Handle Endings Differently Than Human Revolution

November 2, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The trick Eidos used in Human Revolution might not be duplicated for its sequel.

Deus Ex writer Mary DeMarle has some interesting things to say about the endings of Deus Ex Human Revolution, and how that affects how they approached endings in Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

Mary happens to have written for both games, and she explains what Eidos Montral was able to accomplish with Deus Ex Human Revolution, both as a game and thematically, directly informed their approach on Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

At this point, I need to warn you there are huge spoilers for both games, but if you don’t mind the spoilers, these are really interesting  notes on where Eidos is taking the franchise.

The endings for of Deus Ex Human Revolution were written in such a way that there is one common series of events true for all of them. The aug incident strikes several augmented people, causing many of them to go crazy. In the aftermath, augs are no longer celebrated, but frowned upon by and large.

The truth behind these events is only known to Adam Jensen, Eliza, and the player. By means of this conceit, the writers are able to affirm all of the available endings, and assert they will let the players believe the ending they reached is the right one.

The way you got that ending wasn’t very interesting, as it ultimately came down to a single multiple choice near the end. Mary confirms that this was not intentional, but something they fell to due to production and schedule limits.

This time, for Deus Ex Mankind Divided, choices that you make throughout the game, including from the very start, will affect what ending you get.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided will be released on February 23, 2016, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.
