Fallout 4 Voice Actress: ‘No Stone has Been Left Unturned’

October 30, 2015 by Stephen Daly

‘The idea is that the player isn’t playing a character, we’re voicing you guys.’

Over 13,000 lines of dialogue have been recorded by the main actors in Fallout 4, Courtenay Taylor and Brian T. Delaney, who voice the woman and man protagonist respectively and Taylor – who voiced Jack in Mass Effect 2 and 3 – has now spoken about the reaction to seeing the game revealed at E3 earlier this year and the inclusion of voiced protagonists for the first time in the history of the series.

In an interview with Those Gamers, she commented, "Oh for sure, I came in the next session we had and I was like 'ah, I’d like to start from the beginning, please?' Walking into Bethesda E3 and seeing all those people, it really brought it home for me because you don’t think about that stuff when you’re working on the game. You go in and do your work for the day.

"I’m thrilled and excited to have it come out and I’m proud of what small contribution we’ve made and I know the amount of work that everybody at Bethesda put into the game. No stone has been left unturned and it’s gonna be an amazing ride for everybody. I know people are gonna love it," she continued.

Few games have garnered such a level of hype ahead of release as Fallout 4, but that may be due to the fact that there hasn't been a new entry since Fallout New Vegas in 2010 and no new Fallout from Bethesda since 2008.

Fallout 4 has been in development for four years and Taylor discussed what how she approached voicing her character and what Bethesda was looking for in her performance.

"They wanted realistic, truthful reactions from a real person, and not from an idea of a hero or someone with a really rigid way of being," she said. "The idea is that the player isn’t playing a character, we’re voicing you guys. We’re voicing your choices and working hand in glove with the player, so it’s not like someone stepping into a pre-conceived character’s shoes and saying 'Ok I get to be this person for a little while'. It’s the player really being like 'These are the choices I’m gonna make' and having the voice match that and enhance the experience and give it a more immersive experience. We were mindful of that and always trying to get to the truth of the reactions, and it would mesh in a way that wouldn’t take you out of the story but really push you deeper into the story."

At the start of the game you customise a couple in front of their bathroom mirror, depending on which character you choose to walk away from the mirror as will determine whether you play as a man or woman for the rest of the game. No matter who you choose, the bomb sirens start blaring and you rush to Vault 111 with your partner and child to emerge as the only survivor 200 years later.

Fallout 4 launches on November 10th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
