Sony has sold "well over 25 million" PS4 systems, SCE Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny has told GamesIndustry.biz.
Denny's remarks come three months after the platform holder announced it had hit the 25 million milestone but Sony has yet to announce an updated figure.
"I don't think there's a better time to buy into PlayStation – PS4 particularly," Denny said at Paris Games Week. "Our installed base now is well over 25 million. That gives us a massive community of gamers, supported by a lot of new community features. We've got great games out there, more coming through. We're looking forward to 2016, it's an exciting time."
Last week Sony cut the price of the PS4 by €50 in Europe, following similar cuts in the US and Japan, to €349.99 and the company has forecasted PS4 sales of 16.5 million between April 2015 and March 2016.
Microsoft has ceased releasing Xbox One numbers, with the last sales data released by Redmond coming in November 2014 when the company said it had shipped 10 million Xbox Ones to retailers. In future, Microsoft plans to focus on Xbox Live engagement as the key metric rather than sales figures.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently admitted he doesn't know if the Xbox One will ever catch the PS4 but said he believes it's more important to rebuild the brand following the damage done by the system's announcement.
