Interesting news from Square Enix today, as it’s been discovered that the studio is currently developing the next entry into the Just Cause game franchise. As reported in PCGamesN, eagle-eyed users over on ResetEra have unearthed an intriguing nugget of information from Square Enix’s latest Financial Results Briefing.
As well as detailing the company’s successes with titles such as Life Is Strange: True Colors and Final Fantasy XIV, the report also looks forward to the coming financial year. The company’s plan is to create and leverage new gaming IPs as well as to maintain a hold on one specific one of note.
According to the report, Square Enix wants to reorient its portfolio of titles to better cater to the North American and European markets. However, while the focus may be on developing new IPs, they make specific mention of Just Cause, a game which saw its last entry four years ago, with Just Cause 4. The report seemingly confirms that the company is currently working on Just Cause 5 (or whatever the new game will be called), which is sure to come as great news for fans of the franchise.

This is an interesting turn of events given the recent decision from Square Enix to sell off the Western arm of its development studios to The Embracer Group and along with it, a sizeable catalogue of what many would consider its more popular IPs, such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. Presumably, they’ve got big plans for Just Cause 5, but whether or not we’ll get to find out more about it at the upcoming Summer Game Fest showcase remains to be seen.
