Zelda Wii U: Aonuma Promises An Open World Twist, In Response To Fan Feedback

October 23, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Imagine if this twist is anything as crazy and game defining as the time turning in Majora’s Mask.

Eiji Aonuma continues to tease fans for Zelda Wii U, with promise of a surprise twist borne from fan feedback.

Aonuma confirms that Nintendo does listen to all the fans’ feedback and consider them while they are working on Zelda Wii U, but they won’t use all their ideas. It’s not so much that they don’t value all the ideas they don’t use, but the Zelda team wants to keep an element of surprise in the game. In fact, they are just as likely to take a suggestion from the fans, and take it in a direction they did not expect.

And with that, we get to the meat of Aonuma’s latest statements. He says they received feedback from fans that they wanted a bigger open world than what’s been shown in Zelda Wii U so far. With that in mind, he says he has put his own twist into an open world for Zelda Wii U.

Vague statements, but Nintendo does seem interested in making their own unique mark on open world games one way or another. The earlier Lego City Undercover was such an attempt, that may not have worked out, but had less riding on it. For Zelda Wii U, the risks are definitely bigger, so Aonuma and his team must have something compelling planned for it.

On a personal note, Zelda games have played frequently with the idea of parallel and mirror worlds, so it’s possible that Aonuma is leaning into something like that, but it is also possible what they have in mind is completely novel and hasn’t been seen before. Maybe Aonuma even plans to bring back some of the twisted time turning mechanics from Majora’s Mask. What do you think, or rather want, that Zelda Wii U twist to be? Zelda Wii U has been delayed to release in 2016.
