#13 I am Setsuna

Fans of Chrono Trigger will love this next JRPG. I am Setsuna is very reminiscent of the Chrono trigger games with some additional icing that only serves to further enhance the game. I am Setsuna features a great story, stunning visuals, and a lovely art style. It’s a tough game though, perhaps drawing again from its Super Nintendo counterparts. The characters and their tales are immensely engaging and peppered with little secrets, it’s almost impossible to resist growing fond of each one. The skill trees are detailed and allow you to build your characters out to be very powerful warriors.

Well, we’re doing a Samurai list, so why not start out with a game with Samurai in the title?

Samurai Warriors 5 is another in a long line of Musou titles, but this time around, there have been several improvements to make the game even better than the previous one. In fact, the gap between 4 and 5 was 7 years, so they had to be doing SOMETHING in that time, right?

You’ll play as a large group of samurai warriors (get it?) and have to use tactical yet action-packed gameplay to make it through the armies that await you.

With a deep story and fun combat, there’s a lot to enjoy here if you wish to give it a shot.

#11 Onimusha Warlords

The original Onimusha Warlords was an all-time classic when it first came out, and now, with its remaster you’re getting the best of both worlds as you’ll get the original game, but with improvements to the graphics and the gameplay!

This time, you’re playing with better precision than ever before, and will have to go through intense fights to survive the storyline that is still very much intact from the original title. As if that’s not enough, the soundtrack for the game has been improved to further add to the experience.

Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story is a REALLY long name for a video game, but it also puts an interesting twist on the genre. Because in this title, you play as a swordsmith whose daughter has been taken as a way to force him to pay off his debts.

Now, you must make as many swords as possible to clear your ledger. But doing so isn’t that easy. You’ll make what you can by day, then at night, you must venture into the world at large to get materials and train your own fighting skills to ward off monsters and others who try and take what you have.

Become part of a faction, or tip the scales of power in a way that you want them to. Just remember, your daughter’s life is at stake!

#9 One Strike

One Strike is honestly not too unlike Samurai Gunn 2 in its focus. Because this beautifully rendered pixel game puts you in 1-on-1 duels where you will have to land just one strike upon your opponent in order to get the victory.

In fact, things are so fast and furious that each match is said to take no longer than ten seconds most times. You’ll be able to use a variety of tactics to try and get your victory, but remember, you’ll need to think fast on it!

And even though you only have seconds in each fight, your characters are all deep, so choose the one that best suits you, and then go into battle to see if you can be the best samurai warrior ever!

#8 Samurai Bringer

Keeping on our “this is something different” path, we have Samurai Bringer. In this game, you play as the deity Susanoo, who after a losing battle is cast down to the mortal plane without his powers. Now, to defeat the 8-headed dragon who beat him before, he must go through hordes of samurai and demons to regain his power and get revenge.

One of the beautiful things about Samurai Bringer is that every single playthrough that you have is going to be different. The world will change every single time you play. Plus, you’ll be able to make your own combat style via various techniques and abilities that you learn over time. So if you don’t like one? Swap out and see if another works for you.

#7 Black and White Bushido

#3 Samurai Shodown

Samurai Shodown was a classic game back in the day, and it was one of a few titles that truly tried to showcase the art of samurai duels. And now, the modern day version is here, and it’s just as good at doing what it was meant to do: make battles tense and fun.

You’ll play as a set of warriors with various backgrounds, then have to use your brain and your sword in order to achieve victory. Ok, I’m a little biased on this one because I like Samurai Jack a lot as a series. And Battle Through Time was a game that was made in part by the creator to help make this a true in-canon game that honored much of the series.

In it, right after Jack’s “final battle” with Aku, Jack goes through a portal to the past, but just before he gets there, Aku throws him into a special dimension. One where Jack must now relive his greatest fights, else die at the hands of Aku.
