Theory: Is Far Cry Primal Undermining Former Ubisoft Employee Patrice Desilets?

October 12, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Ubisoft certainly has the muscle to undermine Patrice’s latest indie effort.

Is Ubisoft up to something suspicious with Far Cry Primal? A fan analyzes  the game’s similarities to another upcoming game, with quite a connection to Ubisoft.  You can subscribe to our source, Give It Thought, on YouTube, here.

As you may know, Patrice Desilets is a former employee of Ubisoft, who made his name under the company with the Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed games. In betweenPrince of Persia The Sands of Time, Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood were some of Ubisoft’s and Desilet’s best years in gaming. It was specifically Assassin’s Creed that drove Ubisoft to becoming one of the top game companies in the industry, on par with EA and THQ.

Desilets was named creative director, but after Ubisoft denied him from taking on even more creative liberties, he left the company. He was working on 1666 Amsterdam, another open world IP, under THQ, when that company went under, and Ubisoft snagged the 1666’s studio, THQ Montreal.

At this point, things turned from bittersweet to just bitter between the company and its former employer. Ubisoft claimed Desilets fell behind in production, and Desilets disputes this claim. Relations sour so that Desilets is either fired or leaves the company.

After his non compete clause expired, Desilets forms a new company, Panache Games, and announces a new project, Ancestors A Humankind Odyssey. Desilets has gone into detail on this game already, which eschews the tight action of his previous work for what appears to be something more abstract and open ended.

And so, we move into the past week. Far Cry Primal is transparently an open world game with a setting in prehistoric times, allowing you to play as cavemen.  As our source argues, even if there was no intention to undermine Panache’s project, the comparisons will be inevitable, and Ubisoft has the muscle to push their project over Panache’s.
