Rise of the Tomb Raider Will Offer Microtransactions with ‘Expedition Cards’

October 8, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Rise of the Tomb Raider is set to offer microtransactions to players.

The upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider will have a DLC Season Sass, Crystal Dynamics has announced. Alongside announcing the availability of the digital pre-order, the studio has revealed what will be going into the game's Season Pass, which costs $30.

The publisher says that the game will include microtransactions in the form of game-modifying items called "Expedition Cards." These items can be used to attain better equipment and perks, as well as aesthetic differences like Big Head Mode. Some of these cards provide an enormous benefit to the player, allowing Lara to heal herself without using any resources, for example. These cards can be purchased through in-game credit, which is attained just by playing the game. However, players can opt to pay real money for them.

"In Rise of the Tomb Raider, you'll earn credits by completing challenges and exploring the world," reads a post on Xbox Wire. "These credits can be used to purchase Expedition Card packs. When used, Expedition Cards become modifiers in game modes outside of the single player campaign. Some Cards are humorous, such as Big Head Mode, while others can increase the challenge or give you special advantages.

"There are two types of Expedition Cards: Foil and Common. A Foil Card will give Lara the strongest or strangest variations and can be used as many times as you wish. A Common Card is only used once, and you'll need to earn more credits to buy it back."

For the Season Pass, as previously detailed, you'll get three major releases including Endurance Mode, a new tomb in Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and a horde mode called Cold Darkness Awakened that sees you fighting off waves of infected predators. Players can expect to receive a stream of outfits, weapons and Expedition Cards.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released on Xbox 360 and Xbox One in November 2015, Windows in early 2016, and for PlayStation 4 in late 2016.
