PlayStation VR: Sony’s Two Patents For Motion Controls Revealed

October 8, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The patents confirm Sony is interested in adding motion controls.

Sony has filed two patents that hint at new ways of controlling and moving for PlayStation VR.

The first patent is for a ‘Gaming Device with Volumetric Sensing’. This tech detects a player’s hand, in such a way that it interrupts itself repeatedly to receive consistent information. Detectors can include ultrasonic, microphone sensor, and IR emitter and sensors. Using this data, PlayStation VR can give you a consistent image, such as a football on your hand.

The second patent is for wristbands equipped with cameras. These bands are also used for hand-tracking, and have LEDs and inertial sensors.

Of course, Sony filing these patents does not confirm that they will be using this technology, but it is an indication that they are investigating additional motion inputs for PlayStation VR, to match with competitors.

Which of these motion controls would you like to try? Do you think PlayStation VR does not even need it? Share your thoughts in the comments.
