Star Wars: The Old Republic Will Feature Achievements at Launch

September 28, 2011 by Josh Harmon

The first batch of achievements will focus on larger accomplishments, with the system being expanded over time.

Star Wars: The Old Republic lead writer Daniel Erickson has confirmed that the BioWare MMO will indeed be sporting achievements at launch. Better still, he assures us they won't be trivial, but rather rewards for doing "big, heroic, stuff".

The news surfaced at a Eurogamer Expo Q&A session, as reported by TOR fan site Darth Hater. When asked whether The Old Republic would offer players the chance to earn achievements, community manager Stephen Reid initially stated they wouldn't be making it into the game before its ship date, but he was quickly corrected by Erickson, who assured fans that they would, in fact, be ready in time for launch.

Erickson then went on to explain the scope that BioWare was shooting for with the first batch of achievements.

"They're not going to be the achievements, the crazy achievements that you have to place everywhere, that are like, 'Hey if you drink 6 beers and fart in a cantina.'

"Version 1 of the achievement system [which will be included at launch] is actually doing big, heroic stuff, because there's a ton of great optional content in The Old Republic. Like, "Hey, I went to every world and kicked the world boss's ass." Those kinds of achievements. That's going to be the level one system.

"People need reasons to go back to planets and run around and do that other stuff, so [more trivial achievements] will come second. The first system is, 'Hey, here's my bragging rights, here's the bad ass stuff I did in-game.'"

EA and BioWare recently revealed the subscription details for The Old Republic, which goes live in North America on December 20 and Europe on December 22.
