NBA 2K16: Spike Lee Reveals Biggest Challenges In Production

September 28, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

It turns out it wasn’t a bed of roses for the veteran film director, not that anything was.

Spike Lee has revealed to Vibe what it took to make the story for NBA 2K16.

For NBA 2K16, your character gets the default name Frequency Vibrations, and the game goes through your career from high school to the NBA. The trailer makes a point to show you with your manager, your family, and an unseen character whose voice indicates he will be a major source of conflict for the story.

Lee said he struggled the most with dealing with the actors being in motion capture, and not acting live on a stage or on the streets as he was accustomed to:

The biggest challenge is that ’2K’ is shot in motion control, which means that actors aren’t wearing costumes – they’re wearing a suit. There’s no background. All the stuff is put in post-production, so they try to visualize the way it’s gonna look.

Lee says he basically gave himself a quick clinic to learn the ins and outs of stop motion in the days he had prior to filming:

We had like a week of rehearsal, then we had to hit it. But before we did that, I went out there to the studio for a couple of days, messed around with the cameras, and tried to get acclimated to it. But it was a very, very short learning curve. It’s for the actors, too.

At his best, Spike Lee’s work doesn’t just get awarded, but selected by the National Film Registry as worth preservation. However, Spike has made a few stinkers as well.

Unlike Guillermo Del Toro, whom fans are still dismayed over, Spike Lee managed to finish production on his game, and it is releasing very soon. Are you looking forward to Spike Lee’s latest joint, indifferent, or unhappy about it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

NBA 2K16 A Spike Lee Joint will be releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows tomorrow.
