Trophy Support Coming To PlayStation Classics Via PS+ Premium?

May 19, 2022 by Paul James

Earlier this week we all got a look at the line-up of titles coming to PlayStation Plus, via the new Premium/Deluxe tiers, and while many considered the selection of titles to be quite reasonable as a starting point, others voiced their displeasure at the relative lack of PS1, PS2, and PSP representation in the line-up given that the classics are one of the primary attractors to the top tier. We now have a potential reason as to why the suite of titles available isn’t as long as we’d first hoped – games are getting trophy support.

Today it was revealed, via PlayStation First Party Studio – Bend Studio, and their Twitter account, that their game, Syphon Filter, one of the few PS1 classics on the list would be receiving trophy support. The tweet reads as follows:

“Incoming From Bend Studio: Agency intel reports that Syphon Filter will include Trophies when it arrives on the all-new PlayStation Plus.”, the tweet came accompanied by a small clip that demonstrates one particular trophy, presumably the game’s first “An explosive start” popping.

Speculation had run rampant through trophy collecting communities as the rumours of the revised PlayStation Plus were building that PlayStation may look to add some modern accoutrements to the titles making the roster, and while we’ve so far only officially heard about one title, we can potentially extrapolate that to include at least this initial line-up, one that includes Ape Escape (PS1), Hot Shots Golf (PS1), I.Q. Intelligent Qube (PS1), Jumping Flash! (PS1), Syphon Filter, Super Stardust Portable (PSP), Mr. Driller (PS1), Tekken 2 (PS1), Worms World Party (PS1), and Worms Armageddon (PS1), will all include the same support. Future titles coming to PlayStation Plus remain to be seen, and of course, outside of Bend’s reveal, we don’t yet know if this support is a part of a larger initiative from PlayStation or simply a by-product of a single team’s passion for trophies.

The new PlayStation Plus begins its global rollout next week in Asian countries (excluding Japan), May 23rd, before completing the roll-out with European and Australia/New Zealand by June 22nd. If no official word comes from Sony about wider trophy support, then we’ll soon know for sure when the launch begins next week.
