StarCraft 2 Dev on Legacy of the Void Development, Franchise’s Future

September 18, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

Post-launch updates to Legacy of the Void will take inspiration from another Blizzard game.

Earlier this week, lead producer Chris Sigaty premiered the opening cinematic for StarCraft 2’s final stand-alone expansion, Legacy of the Void, at the World Championship Series 2015. PCGamesN had a chance to speak with Sigaty about the upcoming expansion and his thoughts on the franchise’s future beyond StarCraft 2.

Speaking on the macro changes being implemented with Legacy of the Void, the same changes being tested in beta currently, Sagitay believes that whatever changes are made based on beta feedback, Void will continue to change post-launch due to players reacting to big changes for StarCraft 2’s metagame.

"No matter what we do during this stage [of the beta], it is guaranteed that significant change will be necessary beyond this,” Sagitay said. “It is very difficult to get the best of the best playing right now because they can’t shift focus. It’s actually detrimental [for them to do so]. What we’ve gotten is extremely valuable, but there will be things discovered that we don’t understand right now that will require change, and I suspect significant change, again after launch.

"It’s gonna play out differently and then we’ll learn some things and we’ll make some more tweaks. What allows me to sleep at night is we know we’ll change and we’ll make corrections and we’ll learn more."

Further discussing the post-launch development of Legacy of the Void, Sagitay compared the team’s development plans to that of another Blizzard game, Heroes of the Storm, which receives smaller updates more frequently to constantly update the game to changes in metagame and player feedback.

"We are moving into a space with StarCraft that will take a lot of lessons from what Heroes has learned – not that it’s going free to play – but in content creation.,” Sagitay said. “We’ll be supporting it with regular, smaller, more digestible updates that will happen as we get into next year (and beyond) that mirror where Heroes is today. Rather than, 'Alright guys let’s get down to taking notes for Heart of the Swarm' after Wings of Liberty. That’s a much bigger project, this is more about ninja moves that can happen at lots of different places."

You can check out the full interview with PCGamesN here for more on StarCraft 2, Sagitay’s professional future at Blizzard, and more.

StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void will be released on Nov. 10 on PC.
