Netflix’s Sandman Could Very Well Live Up To Expectations

May 19, 2022 by John McDonald

It’s looking like an interesting one.

The hype around Netflix’s Sandman series has been huge, so the automatic worry is that it wouldn’t live up to it, like so many comic adaptations from the past. Well, what we’re hearing now is that it could very well be one to watch out for, no doubt exciting fans of the Neil Gaiman DC Comics/Vertigo graphic novel.

Fans of the story will already know that there have been one or two miserable attempts to adapt this character’s story, one of them without the consent of Neil Gaiman himself, and look how that turned out.

There is a strong team behind Netflix’s Sandman series though, with Gaiman we know as the executive producer, where he will be joined by David Goyer (Man of Steel), and Allen Heinberg (Wonder Woman), with two-time Tony nominee Tom Sturridge portraying the series protagonist, Morpheus, or The Lord of Dreams – the latter definitely has a vibe to it.

What we know about the series so far is that season 1 will consist of a 12-episode arc and will be based on the first two Sandman graphic novels: “Preludes and Nocturnes” and “A Doll’s House”, which fans will know as being the beginning of this dark and mysterious character.

Netflix recently released some promotional photos and unseen footage as part of the GeekedWeek trailer (which you can watch here), and if these are anything to go by then The Sandman could be one hell of a show. It can often feel like a difficult task to adapt such violent graphic novels, but Zack Snyder’s acclaimed Watchmen made the impossible, possible. It led to an equally great HBO series as well, which can only mean good things for Netflix’s Sandman series.

If you take a look at the trailer, you can see Sturridge as the ghostly looking Lord of Dreams (there’s just something about that name that rocks), where he shows off just some of his abilities, and also sees the character visiting Hell to meet with Lucifer. Now, it’s only a snippet but it is already showing quite a lot of promise, so let us hope that it delivers in everything it has set out to do.
