Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary News Coming Soon, Says Nomura

May 18, 2022 by Carley Garcia

Will we finally be seeing Remake Part 2?

2022 marks the 35th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series as a whole, but it also marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most beloved entries in the legendary RPG franchise–Final Fantasy VII. The 1997 title has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and is known as one of the greatest games of all time, influencing the gaming landscape for decades to come. With the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, longtime fans have been pulled back into Midgar, and newcomers to the legendary title are anxious for the release of Part 2 to find out how the story continues. According to Tetsuya Nomura, more Final Fantasy VII news is just over the horizon.

During today’s Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier live stream, Nomura confirmed that more information regarding the game’s 25th anniversary will be released sometime in June. While he didn’t go into detail, most fans are speculating that more information about Remake Part 2 or the FFVII mobile title Ever Crisis will be the highlights. Both are currently in active development.

In January, Nomura and Final Fantasy VII director Yoshinori Kitase suggested that more information about the second part of Final Fantasy VII Remake would be coming sometime in 2022. Additionally, other projects related to the seventh title in the series have been teased, so some surprises might be on the way.

During an earnings call earlier this week, Square Enix revealed that fans can also expect more news regarding the series’ 35th anniversary later this month or in early June. Unsurprisingly, the publisher noted that Final Fantasy XVI is the big focus this year. A trailer for the next mainline installment is said to be premiering soon.

What else can we expect to see featured for the series’ big anniversary? The Pixel Remasters may be getting console ports, as many fans have expressed frustration at the games only being available for PC. Recent leaks have also implied that Final Fantasy IX could be getting a remake in the same vein as FFVII, while Final Fantasy Tactics could also be getting a remaster. Both of these details were found in the infamous Nvidia leaks.
