Final Fantasy XV Sales Surpass 10 Million Worldwide

May 17, 2022 by Carley Garcia

This makes XV one of the best-selling Final Fantasy games to date.

Over five years have passed since Final Fantasy XV was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2016. As the next installment to the long-running series draws closer, Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XV has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. This includes total worldwide sales for Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition and units for all platforms.

The above Tweet reads “Final Fantasy XV has sold 10 million units worldwide! Thank you to everyone for your support, and thank you for your support of FFXV going forward!”

In terms of Final Fantasy sales, this puts XV towards the top. The original Final Fantasy VII has sold around 13 million units, while Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIV have both sold around 10 million copies as well.

Set in the fictional world of Eos, Final Fantasy XV tells the story of Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian throne. Aside from Insomnia, the capital of Lucis, the world is dominated by the empire of Niflheim, who seek control of the magical Crystal protected by the Lucian royal family. Just before peace negotiations are due to start, Niflheim attacks the capital and steals the beloved Crystal. The prince and his three closest friends must venture across the land to retrieve the Crystal and defeat Niflheim.

The next mainline title in the franchise, Final Fantasy XVI, does not yet have a release date. The first trailer for the game dropped during the PlayStation 5 reveal in 2020, with news coming to a slow trickle in the two years following. In January, the game’s producer Naoki Yoshida promised that more XVI news would be coming in Spring 2022 after development on the game was pushed back almost half a year due to the pandemic. Earlier this month, Yoshida revealed that a trailer for Final Fantasy XVI is finished and will be revealed soon.

“Final Fantasy XVI aims to integrate the story and the gaming experience into a single-player game. Unlike online, which portrays multiple players simultaneously, Final Fantasy XVI focuses on the individual,” Yoshida said in a recent interview. “This makes the story more immersive. It’s a very dense story.”
