Destiny: O’Donnel Lawsuit Reveals Contract For Five Games

Bungie has five Destiny related projects planned for release all the way through 2020. We know this thanks to a surprising source close to the company.

Marty O’Donnell was a composer at Bungie, who sued them after a bitter separation and recently won. The courts determined that Bungie broke their contract with O’Donell when they fired him and forced him to waive his equity for vacation pay. O’Donnell managed to get both back, and tell the story of the division.

You can read the full details here, but the relationship between O’Donnell and Bungie fizzled over his composition the Music of the Spheres, a symphonic suite he worked on with Paul McCartney.  Marty’s Music of the Spheres was commissioned forDestiny, and as such the game was going to come up in the courts. However, the suit also compelled Bungie to reveal more than they would have wanted to.

First, a recap. We do know that Destiny is the product of a ten year development and marketing deal between Bungie and Activision. We also know that the deal was for a first person shooter that would release multiple episodes over those ten years. Finally, we know Destiny is Bungie’s biggest game so far, and that Activision’s advances have been a significant source of the studio’s income.

Court documents outlined retail releases for a Project Tiger, as well as one Comet 4. Project Tiger had releases planned for September 24, 2013, September 30, 2015, September 30, 2017, and September 30, 2019. Comet 4 will be released on September 30, 2020.

We do know Destiny was delayed for quite some time, eventually seeing release on September 9, 2014. The Taken King will be releasing on September 15, 2015.

And so, for Destiny fans, this seems to be a peek into the future. Bungie will be releasing more installments every September for the coming years, and they may be full price every time.
