Zelda: Breath of the Wild Surpasses 28 Million Units Sold

May 10, 2022 by Jaimie Ditchfield

Wild Sales Numbers!

In Nintendo’s recent financial report, the Japanese company has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has surpassed 28 million units sold worldwide. 26.55 million copies were sold on Nintendo Switch, while the remaining 1.69 million were on Wii U. Additionally, Nintendo has also revealed the sales numbers for another Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, which has sold 3.91 million units, meaning that it has outsold the original Nintendo Wii version of the game.

Nintendo recently delayed the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild, changing its release window from Holiday 2022 to Spring 2023. If the game launches at a similar time period as the original, it will be six years since the release of one of gaming’s most important titles in recent memory.

This update in sales numbers also reveals that Breath of the Wild is the 4th best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, and has managed to push past Pokemon Sword and Shield. With the sequel scheduled for release in Spring next year, these numbers are likely to increase by a significant amount.

Regarding Skyward Sword HD, this means that there is more evidence to support the idea of ports working wonders for Nintendo in the sales department. During the Nintendo Switch’s ongoing life cycle, Nintendo has been adamant to release ports for various games in its backlog. These ports have sold significantly better now that they’re on a platform with portable capabilities, and Skyward Sword HD favored better this time around due to its various quality-of-life improvements.

Nintendo’s financial report also revealed that the Pokemon series has managed to ship almost 35 million units in the past year. It’s clear that the big N is doing extremely well following the underwhelming Wii U era, and they’re continuing to thrive with a wide selection of interesting pieces of software.
