Ocarina of Time Enters the Video Game Hall of Fame

May 6, 2022 by John McDonald

It’s about time!

Is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time one of the most recognizable games of all time? There’s definitely an argument to say it is. Ocarina of Time took the world by storm back in 1998 when it was released on the legendary Nintendo 64, offering players the chance to explore this magical land in 3D, which was a huge step up for the franchise.

Just think back to those simpler times of the 90s, you’re getting back home from school and turning your crisp 64 on before you are quickly whisked away to this immersive magical land known as Hyrule. The game has also aged incredibly well and the status of Ocarina of Time has never been questioned even to this day after multiple playthroughs.

Well, today the famed game has just added another accolade to its gigantic collection by being inducted into the Video Games Hall of Fame – and all we can say is that it’s about time. The Video Games Hall of Fame (you probably didn’t even know there was one) was established back in 2015 and was aimed at giving those classic titles a chance to be celebrated like the legends they are.

However, video games don’t simply just get inducted because they are old, oh no. There is a list of a requirements that need to be met before these games are eligible. The list is as followed:

  • Icon Status – the game is widely recognized and remembered
  • Longevity – the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed huge popularity over the years
  • Geographical Reach – the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries
  • Influence – the game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general

Not the easiest list of requirements to meet, but Ocarina of Time is one that smashes them all into touch. Ocarina of Time has been joined by Dance Dance Revolution, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Ms. Pac-Man in this recent group of inductees, so it’s in some pretty good company, that’s for sure. Take a look at the other games in the Hall of Fame here, and see if any of your favorites are on there.
