Mad Max Supports 1080p Resolution on PS4, Xbox One, Map is Endless

August 28, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

Plus details on Max’s vehicle in the game, Magnum Opus.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Avalanche Studios’ upcoming Mad Max will run at 1080p resolution, senior producer John Fuller confirmed to GamingBolt.

Fuller also went into detail about the limits of the map in Mad Max, or lack thereof.

“There are no finite limits to the map… in other words, there is no ‘one side’,” Fuller said. “You can continue driving into The Big Nothing until you get bored or killed.

“Our tech can support enormous worlds but it is always a case of balancing the density of content and travel distances so that the player feels they are in a rich world.”

Like its film counterpart, the wasteland in which Mad Max is set is meant to seem infinite, like walking through an open desert.  Last May, lead graphics programmer Ivar Jansson spoke about the technology behind Mad Max’s open world.

"The engine is optimized for open world games so you will find dynamic time of day and dynamic weather, with some big sand storms," Jansson said. "Mad Max is set in The Wasteland where a lot of the ground is visible, so we added parallax occlusion mapping to give some depth to the terrain material. We are always aiming to support freedom and destructibility on a level that I think makes our games unique."

Fuller also spoke about Max’s vehicle, Magnum Opus, and what it is capable of.

“The Magnum Opus is used to travel, it is used as a weapon, it is used as shelter and it is a constant reflection of the choices you as the player have made in defining Max’s journey.”

Mad Max will be available Sept. 1 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
