Bethesda Wants to Release ‘Three or Four Big Titles a Year’

August 20, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

Company doesn’t want to repeat lack of games after 2011.

Following the release of Fallout 4 this November, Bethesda wants to publish more titles, more consistently year over year, according to vice president of marketing at Bethesda Pete Hines.

In an interview with MCV, Hines commented on the fact that the publisher had a big year of releases in 2011 with Brink, Hunted, Rage, and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but after that only released Dishonored, a Doom 3 update, and some DLC for the aforementioned games.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily the case that we are doing okay with seven studios, but if it was 14 we could do twice as much,” Hines said. “We are pretty aware of who we are and we ultimately want to build to a point where we are doing three or four big titles a year. I would prefer not to be in the same place we were in in 2011, where we had four titles and then went super quiet. I want to avoid that. We want to get to the point of regular releases, but we are not thinking: ‘What if we did eight or 10 games a year?’ That’s just not who we are or how we do things.”

Hines feels that Bethesda is comfortable with its currently slate of development and publishing, not wanting to overextend their reach by continually acquiring new studios.

“We are getting to the point where these studios that we have acquired have now put a thing out, figured out how they work together and are starting to hit a bit more consistency,” he said.

In a separate interview, Hines responded to critics of Fallout 4’s graphics and gameplay, or at least the graphics and gameplay that have been shown so far.

Bethesda next big release will be Fallout 4, which launches Nov. 10, 2015 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
