NBA 2K16 New Ratings System And How It May Have Broken The Game

August 20, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

2K Sports made bad changes, but there is one thing that would counteract this.

Chris Smoove runs down the new ratings system for NBA 2K16 and why 2K Sports made a mistake with it. You can subscribe to him on YouTube here.

The new ratings system compares current players vs the all time greatest players. As a result, Lebron isn’t rated 98 or 99, and is instead a 94. Subsequently, Pau Gasol is rated at 86, and Al Horford, 83.

So, let’s look at how that breaks down to the current roster:

38 players are rated 80 to 85.

19 players are rated 86 to 90.

Finally, only 6 players are rated 90 to 100.

As our source argues, the new ratings systems is a mistake. 2K Sports received feedback that players were rated too high, giving no room for progression. However, this feedback was intended for MyTeam mode, but not the full game.

As a result, the game’s other modes, such as MyCareer and MyLeague, and the way progression works on those modes, is ruined. The mere fact that the ratings are affected by age means getting older alone will lower player ratings.

However, there is one thing that would counteract this issue. If the players perform well anyway, the ratings won’t matter in the end. This seems to be a matter for the AI and other systems to handle.

NBA 2K16 A Spike Lee Joint will be released on September 29, 2015 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows.
