Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Getting New Trailer From Kojima In Midst Of Uncertain Future

August 18, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

If Kojima will continue to work on Metal Gear, it won’t be as cordial a relationship as Sakurai has with Nintendo for Super Smash Bros.

Hideo Kojima has revealed he is working on a new trailer forMetal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

As the launch is approaching I'm editing new trailer w/less spoiler. "The evolution & harmony of Metal Gear",if I name it in EXPO-ish theme.

Kojima says this new trailer will have less spoilers compared to other trailers. He says he could name it something like ‘The evolution and harmony of Metal Gear’, so it seems likely this is another story spoiler, but a small one.

Kojima’s continuing work on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain seems pretty strange, given his current status with Konami. We have heard reports that Kojima Studios in Los Angeles and now Japan have been renamed to remove his name. There is no official confirmation for this yet, but there is reason to believe that Kojima is no longer a full-time employee with Konami as well.

On the other hand, Metal Gear Online has been indefinitely delayed, so at least based on an obligation for that, Kojima may continue working with Konami, if in a limited capacity.

Konami, of course, shared statements emphasizing that they will continue to make Metal Gear games, and that Kojima will be able to continue working on them. However, this is hardly going to be anything like the arrangement Masahiro Sakurai has with Nintendo for Super Smash Bros. Sakurai was allowed to go independent from Nintendo on his own terms, and presumably will continue cordial relations with them even after Iwata’s passing.

Even if Kojima is involved in the next Metal Gear game, there is no guarantee he will have the creative control needed to do it justice, or that he will hang on. If nothing else, all of this makes Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, which Kojima does want his fans to buy and play, that much more important in the franchise’s legacy.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will be released on September 1, 2015 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Windows.
