Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s Realistic Medieval Combat Detailed

August 12, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Check out how Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s combat works.

The developers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance have published a new presentation of the game, showcasing its sword combat.

According to the devs, they spent thousands of hours researching medieval sword combat to make its implementation in the game as realistic as possible. You can even try it for yourself by playing the tech alpha of the game by backing it.

"I asked myself whether a first person realistic medieval combat system could be implemented into a game," says Daniel Vavra, the game's principle creator, who then showcases a real world reenactment of medieval warfare. He explains the difficulty in bringing sword combat into a game in a way that a normal person could control it using a mouse and keyboard.

"I thought about it for awhile and came to the conclusion that it could," he continues.

"Basically I had no clue how it should look but I knew for sure it doesn't look as in the majority of games and movies. The combatants don't spend most of the time in a clinch and it really doesn't have much in common with ballet."

"The swordfighter's objective isn't to attack his opponent's sword, but his body." he says. "Despite a common misconception you can move around in armor surprisingly well."

The developers studied medieval manuscripts and collaborated with people who are using them to bring European medieval martial arts to life. They also tried it themselves in theory and in practice, which they then transferred into the game itself.

Check out the video below to see what they came up with.

The game is slated for release in Summer 2016.
