Bethesda Explains Why Fallout 4 Doesn’t Have a Level Cap

August 7, 2015 by Stephen Daly

And you can keep playing after finishing the main story.

Fallout 4 will not have a level cap, developer Bethesda has announced.

In addition, players will be able to continue exploring the game even after completing the main story campaign. The developer confirmed the news on Twitter, where it said:

To our fans who’ve asked: Fallout 4 doesn’t end when the main story is over and there is no level cap. You can keep playing and leveling.

Fallout 3 ended when players finished the story and caused quite a stir, ultimately leading Bethesda to allow players to keep going after the campaign with the Broken Steel expansion.

All previous Fallout games have featured level caps which were as follows:

  • Fallout : 21
  • Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel: 99
  • Fallout 3: 20 (30 with the Broken Steel DLC)
  • Fallout New Vegas: 30 (Up to 50 with four DLCs which each raised the level cap by 5)

More details were revealed about the game's combat, looting, and AI at gamescom, and all of these aspects seem to be much improved over previous games in the series.

Fallout 4 launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 10th.
