Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Arnie Roth made a surprise reveal during the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds of a pending Final Fantasy XII remake.
Much like the The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses series, the Distant Worlds Music of Final Fantasy concert series highlights and brings the Final Fantasy songs culled from the various games, to be performed live with a full orchestra. While this concert series began in 2007, it had several predecessors in the years before, starting with the 2002 Final Fantasy concert in Japan. This concert series is headed by Roth.
While making this announcement, Roth motioned to Final Fantasy XII Hitoshi Sakimoto, who was in attendance.
Square Enix did hint at upcoming remakes of more Final Fantasy games, particularly on PlayStation 4. However, based on their output so far, they will not all be full remakes like they promised for Final Fantasy VII. Coincidentally, Final Fantasy VII will get both a full remake and a more low budget rerelease. Roth also did not mention any platforms, so the game may not be a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
Set in Ivalice, Final Fantasy VII finds you bringing together Dalmascan princess Ashe, and a budding sky pirate, Vahn, as they team up with a motley crew in the fight against the oppressive Archadian Empire.
Final Fantasy VII was originally released to the PlayStation 2 in 2006 and never received a rerelease until now. It did receive a sequel on the DS called Final Fantasy VII Revenant Wings, and was going to receive a spinoff and follow up game codenamed Fortress, that was unfortunately ultimately cancelled.
