Fallout 4 Mod Tools & Creation Kit Details Revealed By Bethesda

July 29, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Bethesda has shared details about the Fallout 4’s mod tools.

One of the best things about Bethesda's open-world RPGs is the ability to mod them to your heart's content. Even years after the release of Skyrim and Fallout 3, modders continue to add, modify, and improve these games with quality content.

Thanks to how well-developed and well-supported the modding tools are for Bethesda's games, modders are able to add everything from new enemies and weapons to completely change how the games look and feel.

Since Fallout 4 was announced, Bethesda has pledged to support the game's modding community with the Creation Kit modding tools, and has said that mods released for the PC will be compatible with the Xbox One platform, and potentially even the PlayStation 4. Even now before the game has come out, modders are already hard at work on developing content for the game.

That being said, the Creation Kit won't be out until after the game's release, because Bethesda wants to focus on polishing the game up and making sure they deliver the best possible experience.

“Our entire focus is on finishing the game. Nobody cares about mods if the game sucks," said Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines in an interview with IGN. "This has always been our philosophy. We shift energy to construction tools, the creation kit, and all of that stuff once the game is done, and we start to figure out what all of that is going to look like.”

Fallout 4 may be "basically done," but being playable and being completely polished are two different things.

You shouldn't hold your breath to see the Creation Kit sometime before the end of 2015. Bethesda says that the tools won't be out until next year.

“The idea is that [the tools] will work on all platforms, but the truth is the system doesn’t exist. It’s still being built and worked on and it’s going to take awhile. It’s going to take clearly into next year because we can’t even start it…”

Bethesda says that the studio has plans to use its newly launched Bethesda.net hub as a platform for modders to share their creations, and iterated that Doom modders will also be able to do the same with their creations in SnapMap.

Fallout 4 is slated for release on the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 10, 2015.
