Square Enix has dropped another bombshell during the Dragon Quest stream, which has left everyone excited, if they are scratching heads. Dragon Quest X has been confirmed for Nintendo’s future console, codenamed the NX. They are also considering making Dragon Quest XI a launch title for the platform.
For context’s sake, both Dragon Quest games are also getting representation on the PlayStation 4 and 3DS. While some fans jumped the gun and assumed the NX would be a home console, Square did not actually mention anything that supports that fan theory.
So, let’s break this down.
If the Nintendo NX is a home console, then it is a capable console. Dragon Quest XI runs on Unreal Engine 4 on PlayStation 4, so it seems safe to assume that the NX port will be based on the Unreal Engine version as well. Of course, if it can run Unreal Engine 4, then the NX will be capable of running other current gen games as well. So, it seems safe to say NX will see a return of Call of Duty games on Nintendo platforms, as well as Ubisoft games, given Ubisoft expressed optimism on their next home console.
If the Nintendo NX is a portable, it’s still interesting news, if for different reasons. It means Square Enix is still eager to put support behind Nintendo’s portables, and at least other Japanese studios, including Capcom and Level 5, will be giving Nintendo some love in the future. At a time when Nintendo themselves will be making mobile games, it’s an encouraging sign for their portables.
Either way, the line about making Dragon Quest XI an NX launch title is even more curious. Perhaps Square Enix already has prior knowledge of the platform, but not enough to make a decision.
Either way, Square Enix is planning a 2016 release for Dragon Quest XI. Of course, we know the 3DS and PlayStation 4 versions are making that release date, but is this a hint that the NX will be announced or even released in 2016 as well?
