Famitsu magazine has unwittingly leaked the Afghanistan map for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
As leaks come and go, this one is at least a mitigated spoiler. This is the physical map you can get if you buy the collector’s edition of the game. Some fans have seen it already, and of course, it won’t take long before everyone gets an idea of how big this is anyway.
Before you ask, although the game places Snake in a specific historical point in Afghanistan’s history, the map has been fictionalized, so if you try to Google areas like Da Ghwandai Khar, it will only take you back to Metal Gear. On the side, while most people only know of Kabul from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the city actually has a 3,500 year old history, and has always been valued as a part of the trade routes of South and Central Asia.
With that out of the way, the map indicates a very large area, matching the expectations for an open world game, and this is only one location. You have seen much of Afghanistan from The Phantom Pain already; it’s been the sole focus of multiple preview videos and trailers, and it was also what many early previewers got to play.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will be released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on September 1, and then on Windows via Steam on September 15.
