Horizon Forbidden West: Use This Trick Against Thunderjaws

March 15, 2022 by Peter Hunt Szpytek

Now that’s a big machine.

Horizon Forbidden West features plenty of giant robotic monsters for Aloy to hunt and defeat. While Forbidden West certainly ups the ante in terms of mechanical monstrosities from Zero Dawn, there’s still truly nothing scarier than having to fight a Thunderjaw which appears in both games.

Thunderjaws are Horizon Forbidden West‘s t-rex equivalent and are just as scary and dangerous as they sound. Players will certainly remember the first time they took one down on their own since they’re so large and deal so much damage. Generally, they’re to be avoided if the player isn’t fully stocked with ammo and ready for a fight, however one tip pointed out on Reddit can make battles against Thunderjaws much easier without needing to adjust the game’s difficulty at all.

How to Make Thunderjaw Fights Easier

One of the toughest things to manage during a fight with a Thunderjaw is the flying disks that the machines frequently shoot out during the fight. The disks spawn a few at a time and shoot lasers at Aloy making them a tricky obstacle to maneuver while also trying to keep track of the agitated and deadly Thunderjaw.

Usually, players will just try to dodge roll out of the way of the lasers and focus their attention back on the Thunderjaw before them. As pointed out by Reddit user u/AkinToTheBreach in the r/Horizon sub-Reddit, there’s a simple way to deal with the disks: just shoot them with an arrow.

You can shoot down Thunderjaw Discs out of the air in Forbidden West from horizon

After being hit, the disks will explode and stop being an issue so that Aloy can focus on the Thunderjaw. Even if a player can successfully dodge their lasers, it’s a good idea to destroy the disks as their explosions can easily damage anything around them including the Thunderjaw itself. Explosion damage is huge for removing components which can make machines much easier to fight and when dealing with a Thunderjaw, any edge the player can get is a big advantage.

While shooting the disks out of the sky doesn’t completely alleviate the difficulty of fighting a Thunderjaw, it does certainly make things easier. It’s a tip that many could use when taking on one of Horizon Forbidden West‘s toughest foes and should be utilized as another tactic for aggressive playstyles.
