The Steam Controller Developer Edition Applications Are Open

July 15, 2015 by Vanessa Lopa

We’re hoping there’s something really special about this controller.

The Steam Controller has been talked about a bit. It should work with the Steam Machine, of course, but some folks have been wondering if it’ll also work out of the box with Windows or Mac. They could also try seizing the “developer controller of choice” title from the Xbox 360 controller, but all that is mere speculation.

What Valve wants to put into consumers’ hands is a controller that’ll provide the kind of precision that many players crave. The original design got a makeover, and while it doesn’t look drastically different, maybe there’s something we’re missing. Maybe it’s got something to do with the game development side that the controller will also cater to? Maybe we'll find out soon.

Valve is now accepting applications for the Steam Controller Developer Edition. This is for the devs who want to build their game around the Steam Controller, so maybe there’s a little something extra on this controller that we aren’t getting with our PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii U controllers individually. The application process isn’t complicated: Just tell them a few important bits of information like your company name and what game you're working on here.

If you’re not a developer, you’ve got to go through the regular route of obtaining a Steam Controller. It’ll be made publicly available on November 10, 2015, that’s not too long a wait.
