Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary Site Teases New Titles

March 9, 2022 by Carley Garcia

This calls for a celebration.

If there’s one franchise with serious staying power, it’s Final Fantasy. The first game in the series was released back in December 1987 and was originally titled Fighting Fantasy, but due to copyright issues and the impending doom of Square as a company, the name was changed to reflect the circumstances. Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said that he would have quit the game industry to go back to college had the game not sold well. We know how that turned out.

Today, Square Enix unveiled a new website to celebrate 35 incredible years of the Final Fantasy series, teasing more about upcoming titles and hinting at many more to come.

“The first Final Fantasy title was released on December 18, 1987, and in 2022 the series reaches its 35th anniversary,” the main page reads. “In this 35th anniversary year, we will be bringing you many exciting new ways to enjoy the worlds of Final Fantasy. Please look forward to what Final Fantasy has in store.”

The site also includes a message from the producer of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Yoshinori Kitase. He notes that while 2022 is the 35th anniversary of the series as a whole, it also marks the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy V, the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, and the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy XI.

“This is only possible because of the long-lasting passionate support for each game in the FF series from fans like you. Thank you so much,” Kitase writes.

The website lists Chocobo GP and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin as upcoming titles, with the text “and more” below. During today’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast, it’s possible that a new title could be revealed. We may also see more information regarding Final Fantasy XVI, as producer Naoki Yoshida previously promised a reveal sometime in Spring 2022.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is also likely to see a reveal soon. During a live stream in January, producer Yoshinori Kitase mentioned that he’d like to announce it during the franchise’s 35th anniversary year.
