The PS5 is getting a new firmware update (ver. 21.02-04.51)

March 8, 2022 by A.K Rahming

Bigger things ahead.

Another day, another system update for Sony’s latest home console. The company is due to release firmware update 21.02-04.51.00 today (March 8).

Sony has promised a lot of new features that are expected to come in due time for the PS5. However, this particular update doesn’t seem like it’ll be providing too much on that front.

Seeing that it weighs in at a mere 900MB, this latest firmware update for the PS5 is unsurprisingly the equivalent of Nintendo’s infamous “stability patches”, with its patch notes simply reading:

“This system software update improves system performance”.

It certainly doesn’t get more straightforward than that. This is just a run-of-the-mill general maintenance update for the PS5 that’ll make some changes to the system’s backend. Doubtful that it’ll make any visible changes for users to see, this could at least be paving the way for the major next system update that’s currently in beta.

As reported by MP1ST, the upcoming PS5 firmware version 3.0-05-.00.00 will include new stuff such as better organization of the Game Base menu and improved functionality, improvements to the Party system, new options for the Accessibility settings, improvements made to the Trophies menu, and a new Voice Command feature that will allow users to issue vocal commands like opening games and apps, and controlling media playback (much like Siri, Alexa and the Google Assistant).

This next PS5 system update has been in beta for the last several weeks, but a definitive release date has yet to be issued.

That said, the aforementioned features it will bring will certainly enhance the usability of the PS5 for quite a number of folks. Still, it does seem like some promised features like adding games to the taskbar have yet to be implemented. Of course, as more time passes, the likelihood of seeing such additions will rise.
