Since the release of Taika Waititi’s film Thor: Ragnarok, excitement for the franchise has been revitalized, creating major anticipation for the next installment: Thor: Love and Thunder. The upcoming sequel is due to debut this coming July and will see Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as the God of Thunder, as well as see the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster as she becomes the Mighty Thor. Variety recently caught the film’s director Taika Waititi on the red carpet and took the opportunity to ask him for a progress update on Thor: Love and Thunder. The filmmaker joked that the movie isn’t ready yet and probably wouldn’t be for several months.
When asked for new details on Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi said there wasn’t much left to say that he hadn’t already shared over the last two years. Except for the fact, the film isn’t finished yet. The director was asked when it would be complete to which he replied, “Comes out in July, so probably like end of June? Probably like a day before the premiere, that’s how we do it.”
While Waititi’s comment was clearly said in jest, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if it was true. James Gunn was previously known to be making changes to Guardians of the Galaxy right up to days before it was released. As filmmaking is all done digitally these days, studios don’t need to worry about leaving time to print the movie and can simply upload the film’s file onto a server right up to its scheduled premiere.
Very few details are currently known about the plot to Thor: Love and Thunder, although several big names have been attached to the upcoming Marvel movie. Tessa Thompson will be returning as Valkyrie and Christian Bale will have his Marvel debut as the film’s villain. The whole cast of Guardians of Galaxy will also make appearances in the next Thor title.
Thor: Love and Thunder will officially premiere in theaters everywhere on July 8, 2022.
