Charlie Cox Talks Bringing Comic Adaptations To TV Over Movies

March 7, 2022 by Todd Black

Why it works better on TV at times.

Superheroes are all over media, and have been for some time to be honest. Go back to the 80s and 90s and you’ll find superhero cartoons, certain live-action TV shows, and of course, the true beginnings of the live-action movie empires that are all over the place no matter if you’re a DC Comics or Marvel fans. And now, with the Arrowverse going strong still and the Disney+ MCU shows doing great as well, there’s a load of content to enjoy. But which format is better? Movies, or TV shows? Daredevil’s Charlie Cox has some insight on that.

In a chat, he noted that while movies do have the “big screen effect”, it can at times come at the cost of character building or picking and choosing how deep to go with the character. He cited his own Daredevil series (which many want to continue on Disney+) as poof of that:

“I think all of these characters lend themselves perfectly to the television format, because they are episodic in their original format,” Cox told ComicBook.com. “The deep fan base has learned to consume them in an episodic format in the comics. The thing I always said about season one of our show was that if you made the movie version, you kind of have to have him in the suit after 20 minutes, and you’ve got a lot of story to tell. And this is one of the mistakes I think the film made, which was that they tried to tell all the stories, they had Foggy, Electra, Kingpin, Bullseye, they had all of those characters in two hours.”

That movie he referred to was the Ben Affleck film and when you compare the two…it’s not even a comparison. Granted, there are a LOT of great comic book movies out there from both sides, but you do have to wonder at times how much deeper they would go if they had more time to give everyone.
