Returning Pokémon

This weekend Nintendo announced the next mainline entries in the Pokémon series. Scarlet and Violet. Nintendo announced the games as part of Pokémon day on February 27. The game will be fully open-world, unlike Pokémon Legends: Arceus which has areas that players can visit like in Monster Hunter. Along with the announcement that the game will be open world, Nintendo showed off the starter Pokémon and others that are confirmed for the game. Let’s take a look at all of the Pokémon confirmed for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet so far

Starters

The stars of the show are of course the new starters for Scarlet and Violet. First up, let’s look at grass-type Sprigatito.

Sprigatito is a capricious and attention-seeking cat-like Pokémon. The first stage is described as being like a kitten. It’s the second cat-like Pokémon to be a starter in a mainline Pokémon game. The first is Litten from Sun and Moon. The name Sprigatito appears to be an amalgamation of sprig/spring and gatito, the Spanish word for kitten. The Spanish naming influence makes sense as the games are set on an Iberian-inspired peninsula.

Next up, the fire croc Pokémon, Fuecoco.

Fuecoco is described as a laidback Pokémon that likes to do things at its own pace. Fuecoco is a fire crocodile and, similar to Sprigatito, this is referenced in its name. Fue seems to be short for fuego, fire in Spanish, and coco is short for cocodrilo, the Spanish word for alligator.

Finally, we have the water duck Pokémon, Quaxly.

Quaxly, is a tidy and earnest duckling Pokémon. The water Pokémon’s name isn’t quite as difficult to guess as the other two starters. Because, well, a duck quacks. I wonder how long it took to come up with that one. Either way, the little duckling is a very smart-looking Pokémon.
