Mighty No 9 Copies Mega Man And Insults Comcept’s Old Home, Argues Hideki Kamiya

July 7, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Kamiya had some words for the highly successful Kickstarter headed by former coworker Keiji Inafune.

Hideki Kamiya is known for being a firebrand on Twitter, but seemed to have been happy to lay low recently. Today, however, he has some words for Comcept projectMighty No 9.

It's like insult to their old home. RT @EliasO151: what are your thoughts on mighty no 9

— 神谷英樹 Hideki Kamiya (@PG_kamiya) July 7, 2015

Similar? It's a copy. RT @TheBlankDork You think that because it looks bad or because it's too similar to Rockman?

When asked about the game, Kamiya said that the game is an insult to their old home, alluding to Capcom. Kamiya also asserts that the game is not just similar to, but is a copy of Mega Man.

Kamiya has said many things about Comcept head Keiji Inafune as well. Most fans remember his tweet about Inafune being more businessman than creator, but Kamiya has been more conciliatory in other remarks. He has said that he respects Inafune as a businessman. Of course, Inafune was technically his boss when they were both at Capcom, although they were from different studios so he did not really get to know the man. Kamiya also brushed off questions about Inafune’s comments regarding the Japanese game industry.

When prodded further, Kamiya pointed out that fans would not know if Capcom was planning to do anything new with the Mega Man license, and even if they did not, that does not excuse copying their IP.

I don't know about that game well. RT @Mazzle5 Would you say the same thing about Koji Igarashi's Bloodstained?

For what it’s worth, Kamiya was also asked about the Bloodstained Kickstarter. Kamiya states that he does not know enough about Koji Igarashi’s return to console development, implying that he has kept tabs of Comcept’s project.

Of course, Kamiya is free to chime in on Comcept’s project, and truth be told, this was a common criticism of the game from since it was announced.

What do you think of Mighty No 9? Do you think this criticism is still warranted? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Mighty No 9 will be released on September 15 on Linux, Windows, and OS X, with ports planned for 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
