A Call of Duty player on Wii raised what he thought was an innocuous question online, but did not realize he was going to bring up something most gamers didn’t even know. The Call of Duty games still have online multiplayer on Wii.
This is a surprise, mainly because Nintendo already shut down Wi-Fi Connection over a year ago. Fans who were still playing games like Mario Kart Wii online were permanently disconnected after GameSpy ended their services. While some fans moved into custom servers, for most Wii owners, it was time to move on.
This is also a surprise on Activision’s end because many fans still remember that they marketed their Wii ports of the Call of Duty games rather haphazardly. In any case, all the Call of Duty Wii games are still playable online, because Activision hosts those servers. The only exception is Call of Duty World at War, because that game happened to use GameSpy servers.
For everything that’s been said about third party support on Nintendo platforms, Activision has served Call of Duty Wii buyers well. Truth be told, those games did sell very well in spite of also being available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
So, why was this fan posting about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 on Wii today? Activision did server maintenance recently, and it led to a boot error that took his rank down to 1. Other fans suspect that his account may have been hacked.
