PlayStation Plus has been required for multiplayer on PlayStation consoles since the launch of the PS4. Although PlayStation Plus began on the PS3, Sony made a commitment at the start of that console’s lifespan that it would never charge for multiplayer on the PS3. Recently, there have been rumors that Sony is looking to shake up its subscription offerings. The company is reported to be looking into a Game Pass-like service to compete with Xbox. Game Pass has become incredibly popular over the last few years and is a major selling point for Xbox consoles. If the rumors are true, it looks like Sony will be combining PlayStation Plus with PlayStation Now, adding multiple subscription tiers and creating one unified service.
