Super Smash Bros E3 Direct: Ryu Controls, DLC Bundle, Free Content, And More

June 14, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Smash fans have Tournament Mode and YouTube uploads to look forward to in the near future.

Much of the new content in Super Smash Bros was leaked early, but that doesn’t mean there are no surprises for fans from today’s Direct. We’re running down the details that weren’t leaked below.

Ryu is the highlight of the incoming characters, as Sakurai has seen it fit to accommodate traditional players. Moves like the Shoryuken and Hadoken can be activated with simple one button presses, but you can get more powerful versions of those moves if you use the traditional quarter circle and DP motions. You can also replicate light, medium and heavy attacks by varying how long you hold the buttons.

Super Smash Bros Ryu is mostly based on his appearance in Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior, including his stage. However, he retains elements of his different games, including his parry from Street Fighter 3 and the Focus Attack Dash Cancel from Street Fighter 4. To sum, Ryu is the first Smash character with two Final Smashes.

Given the investment in making Ryu, he is priced higher than the other DLC characters. I’ve outlined prices for all the DLC below, which is now available for purchase:

·         Ryu $ 5.99 / $ 6.99 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Roy $ 3.99 / $ 4.99 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Lucas $ 3.99 / $ 4.99 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Mii Fighter Costumes $ 0.75 each / $ 1.15 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Mii Fighter Costume Bundle $ 6 / $ 9/20 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Dreamland 64 Stage $ 1.99 / $ 2.99 for Wii U and 3DS

·         Bundle for all three characters, Mii Fighter Costumes, and Dreamland $ 21.96 / $ 29.16 for Wii U and 3DS

True to form, Nintendo has released some free content alongside the DLC. Trophies for Ryu, Ken, Roy, Lucas, and Inkling Girl are free to collect for everyone. The Miiverse stage is patterned after Nintendo’s own social network, and will pull posts from Miiverse to place in the background. Incredibly, each Smash character will have their own Miiverse community, for unique posts for each character.

Finally, Nintendo revealed what Smash fans can look forward to in the future, and it’s quite incredible. In terms of amiibo, Ryu’s and Roy’s amiibo are already in the planning stages, as every fighter in Smash is planned to get an amiibo. Amiibo for  R.O.B., Duck Hunt, Mr. Game & Watch and Falco are already on the way, with Game & Watch amiibo featuring a slot at the base to allow you switch between different Game & Watch poses. Even the Mii Fighters are getting amiibo, based on their original appearances in their Nintendo Direct announcement.

Smash will also get Tournament Mode and Youtube uploading, both completely for free. You will be able to hold community and regular tournaments after the August update. While the YouTube update remains updated, it will allow you to post replays of your matches to the service.

You can watch the 20 minute Nintendo Direct for even more details.
