Interview With Miyazaki Shares Details On Elden Ring

January 27, 2022 by Matt Cook

Elden Ring’s Director shares some new insights on the game.

New information on Elden Ring has been posted on Reddit from the game’s accompanying book, The Overture of Elden Ring. The book is a companion piece to the game that gives fans of the game more detail on the world of Lands Between. The book contains an interview with Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki. In the interview, Miyazaki goes into detail on some previously unknown parts of the game.

On the freedom that players will have in Elden Ring, Miyazaki had this to say.

“I’d say a ‘sense of adventure’ is closer to what we had in mind. It’s not wrong, but the main idea wasn’t to [populate it with] dungeons that needed to be explored top to bottom, but rather [have the open fields act] as something wide and expansive”

“‘Freedom’ was one of the main concepts we worked on. Freedom is strategy, story progression, combat style, and character builds.”

Miyazaki also discussed the size of Elden Ring, particularly in relation to what players were already able to experience in the network test.

“If we’re just talking about open fields, I’d say it’s more than around 10 times the size, but as I was saying before, this doesn’t mean that you’ll need to explore every single corner [of the map]. The vast size serves to make the player feel like they are on an adventure. Aspects of exploration and discovery are designed more loosely, and this is because we don’t want the players to feel pressured by the vast world.

We have also made sure to keep the proportion of mandatory content required to complete the game much lower compared to our previous titles. So instead, if you do decide to tread off the main path, we have made sure that a large volume of content – threats and mysteries, new encounters drama and legends awaits you.”

Finally, Miyazaki also discussed immortality in Elden Ring. When asked about whether demigods get their immortality from the Guidance of Grace, Miyazaki had this to say.

“No that’s different. I don’t think this is the right time to talk about these details, but the immortality of the demigods is associated with the removal of fate’s death from the Elden Ring. At the moment you won’t know what I’m talking about but as you play the game this should become clearer.”
