Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Is Confirmed By Warner Bros

January 27, 2022 by Dani Cook

This is great news for fans of the 2021 film.

The reboot of the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, based on the popular game franchise, was released last year and its sequel has now received the green light from Warner Bros. New Line Cinema has brought on Jeremy Slater, writer of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, to write the martial arts fantasy film.

Speaking on the new project, Jeremy Slater said on Twitter, “Beyond excited to be joining this team! We’re building something bigger and better and bloodier that’s going to blow people’s minds.” Not much is currently known about the project but Slater’s promise to make the sequel “bigger and better and bloodier” than the first will certainly excite fans. Besides scribing Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, Slater is also known for his work on the Netflix hit The Umbrella Academy and The Exorcist show on Fox.

Mortal Kombat (2021) premiered simultaneously on HBO Max and theaters in April 2021, bringing in $22.5 million in the US on opening day. This figure is impressive when factoring in the film’s day-one release online and in theaters, its mature rating, and the pandemic. Mortal Kombat also went on to rank among the top feature titles on HBO’s streaming platform.

The 2021 video game-inspired film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage. The assassin Sub-Zero begins hunting down Young for reasons unbeknownst to him and in an effort to protect his family, seeks out a group of fighters who were chosen to defend Earth against the Outworld. Mortal Kombat (2021) had a long journey to the big screen after going through development hell since the critical and commercial failure of the series’ second movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The film franchise seems to be back on track.

Mortal Kombat 11, the newest game in the franchise, was released in 2019 and is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It garnered many favorable reviews at launch and should tide fans over until the next film’s release.
