The Last Guardian has been in limbo for nearly 8 years. Sony has laughed at cancellation rumors in the past, and in December 2014, TLG director Fumito Ueda explained that they were “making progress under completely new conditions,” which hinted at the possibility of a PlayStation 4 release. Earlier this year, Sony accidentally abandoned the trademark, but they’ve confirmed that they’re still working on the project. The Guardian confirms that it will be at E3 this year.
Quick recap: The Last Guardian follows the story of a developing friendship between a young boy and a dog/bird/cat hybrid named Trico. Trico operates on animal instincts, and the boy (controlled by the player) will have to guide him through tasks. As with any animal, Trico can be unruly and challenging to work with. Throughout the game, the player must also care for Trico by feeding him or removing the spears and arrows in his back.
The last trailer we saw was back in E3 2009, and it looked like it was going to be a sad story. There’s no confirmation from Sony that they’ll be keeping the game as it originally was, or if they tweaked the story a bit. We’ll be watching out for The Last Guardian updates at E3 2015.
