Fortnite Beta Coming to PC, Mac This Fall

June 8, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

This beta comes three and a half years after the announcement of the game.

Fortnite is not only in development for Windows PC, but Mac, as well, developer Epic Games announced at Apple’s WWDC keynote Monday.

A beta is also scheduled for this fall for both Windows PC and Mac, and in a statement to Polygon, an Epic Games representative said, "We're targeting desktops for Mac and the Mac version will be supported along with PC for the closed beta that starts later this year." This will not be the first time players have received a chance to play the game early on Windows PC.

At the keynote, Josh Adams and Bill Bramer went on stage to demo Fortnite, running on Apple’s newly-announced OS X El Capitan and using their “Metal” technology. Bramer emphasized the increased efficiency of working with Metal in developing Fortnite, citing an increased amount of layers being rendered simultaneously in real time and a “70% reduction in CPU usage compared to OpenGL, enabling developers like us to create richer 3D worlds.”

Fornite was announced in December 2011 and presented by lead designer of Gears of War Cliff Bleszinski, who went on to quit Epic Games the following year and has now started his own game development company, Boss Key Productions, which is currently developing its first title. Fortnite is being made with Unreal Engine 4, which recently became “free” of charge.
