Star Trek Online Goes Free-to-Play

September 7, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Cryptic Studios has announced its plans to turn Star Trek Online into a free-to-play title.

It's no surprise that the game isn't working out as well as its developers, Cryptic Studios, had hoped it would. Given the saturation of titles within the MMORPG market, not even a franchise as well known as Star Trek could hope to compete with the likes of World of Warcraft, especially when Warhammer Online didn't fare much better.

The publisher has since announced plans to offer a free-to-play model, which will hopefully allow it to compete against similar F2P titles, if not World of Warcraft itself. The model has allowed Guild Wars and Dungeons & Dragons Online to thrive.

Through the F2P mode, players will be able to purchase anything from gear and new content through an online store and perform a variety of microtransactions. Players will still be able to opt to paying the $14.95 monthly subscription should they prefer to stick to the old model.

Further details can be found at the game's official website.
