PS4 Exclusive Rime is Already Playable, But Sony Has Bigger Plans

June 3, 2015 by Vanessa Lopa

Rime is refreshingly different from the numerous combat-heavy titles we’ve been getting lately, and it looks plenty promising.

We’ve talked about Rime before: It’s the beautiful PlayStation 4-exclusive title developed by Tequila Works, the one that Microsoft turned down. Microsoft Game Studios’ boss, Phil Spencer, has admitted that Microsoft passing up the title was a mistake. We bet they’re kicking themselves even harder now.

Sony took a chance on the title and it’s turning out pretty spectacular. Rime looks like the kind of adventure game that you can play, no matter your age. You play as a young boy who wakes up on the beach of a beautiful island, with only animals surrounding him. His (and your) skills and knowledge will be put to the test, in order to find a way to escape this island. Who is this boy, and how did he end up on this island? These questions remain unanswered, for the time being.

It’s a pleasant-looking, possibly deceptively simple game that sends you on a journey that you know will not be easy, but still feels like something you can conquer. No combat here, as it focuses on puzzle-solving, survival, and exploration. Over the weekend, the official twitter account for Rime and Sony XDev Europe tweeted about the game’s progress: It’s already playable, but that “there is a master plan” for it.

Seeing these updates has us feeling a little giddy inside. Rime currently doesn’t have a release date set, but we’ve got a feeling it’ll be released later this year. It’s looking pretty good, and if Sony’s just putting the finishing touches on it, then we’re probably going to see more of it soon. It’s pretty different from the combat-heavy games that we’re getting a lot of now, would you give Rime a try?
