GTA 5 Production Art Shows What Desert Area, Radar Looked Like In Beta

June 3, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

As always, the art betrays a strong affinity for replicating the aesthetic and geography of Los Angeles.

Ever wondered what GTA 5 looked like during beta? You can get a sneak peek at the game’s development here.

Rockstar senior environment artist Jonathan Gwyn shared pictures for the game. As such, he was tasked with making the outlying areas, at the edges of Los Santos, as well as the desert.

As always, the art betrays a strong affinity for replicating the aesthetic and geography of Los Angeles. The saline soil and frequent droughts direct the strong yellows of these images. Of course these images may not reflect the look of the rest of Los Santos when this are was made.

Check out the images here:

Gwyn’s pictures reveal an older version of the radar, including a square radar box/minimap. There wasn’t as much detail back then, of course, since the game originally came out for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and was slowly rolled out to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.

Even on seventh generation consoles, of course, the degree of graphical detail and visual detail would still be quite impressive. Fans speculate these images were made around 2012, prior to the earliest reveals and trailers. There is also speculation that it may have been made using the build for GTA 4.
