Need For Speed’s Always Online Requirement Prompts Two Change.org Petitions

June 1, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The petitions may prove moot if the Need for Speed turns out to be an MMO as speculated.

Following the announcement that the upcoming Need for Speed reboot will require an online connection, not one but two Change.org petitions have sprung up. Both are requesting Electronic Arts and Ghost Games remove the online requirement.

Many of the arguments these two petitions, one from Jesse Young from Australia, and one from Max Meyer from Germany, should sound familiar to you, as of course, nothing about this is new. SimCity from Maxis also required an internet connection, and this was brought up. Of course, the requirement is hugely unpopular because many gamers still do not have the strong internet connections needed to enjoy games like these.

However, as was brought up in this forum, this upcoming Need for Speed game may be an MMO, in which case there would be no way around the online-only component. EA did just shut down the Need for Speed World MMO, and this would tie in together with the idea of a reboot.

Online racing games have a proven market on PC, as exemplified by iRacing. This is why EA had the Need for Speed World, and Sony and Ubisoft sought to enter that market with new gameplay elements with Driveclub and The Crew, respectively.

Of course, those games have also had their issues, and their precedents may not bode well for this Need for Speed game.

Are you hopeful for this online Need for Speed? Would you play it if it does turn out to be a racing MMO?  Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
